Abstract
Background
The present study was done in order to assess the therapeutic effects of Panax notoginseng extract in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice.
Methods
The level of TNF-α and activated T lymphocyte death were examined. DBA/1 mice were immunized with bovine type II collagen. After immunization, mice were treated with Panax notoginseng extract orally at 25 mg/kg once a day for 28 days. Paw were evaluated macroscopically for redness, swelling and deformities. The severity of paw arthritis was evaluated by histopathological assessment.
Results
There was a maximum of 90% inhibition of TNF-α release and 80% cell death of activated T lymphocyte after treatment with Panax notoginseng extract, when compared to the control. Also, administration of Panax notoginseng extract significantly delayed the onset of disease and suppressed the progression of CIA. The erosion of cartilage was reduced in mouse paw after treatment with Panax notoginseng extract.
Conclusion
Our present results showed a therapeutic effect of Panax notoginseng extract on CIA through inhibition of TNF-α release and deaths of activated T lymphocyte. Thus, we believe that Panax notoginseng extract contains effective substances that have the potential to overcome rheumatoid arthritis.
