Abstract
Background
In Korea, the elderly populations are growing up because of mean lifetime increases. Postmenopausal osteoporosis resulted in fractures at wrist, vertebrae, and femoral neck. Alendronate (Alend?; Whanin Pharm. Co, Ltd., Seoul, Korea) is one of anti-resorptive drugs for treatment of osteoporosis and resulted in a decrease of bone turnover. So, It's very effective for the treatment and prevent fractures. There are few available data about the effects of that drug in Korean postmenopausal women. Subjects and Methods: We evaluated 69 postmenopausal osteoporotic Korean women who visited and treated for 1-year at osteoporosis clinic in Samsung Cheil Hospital & Women's Health Care Center from Apil 1999 to Aug. 2000. Subjects were stratified in 3 groups by the treatment regimen. Group I were treated with estrogen only, group II had HRT with Alend? 5 mg daily, and group III were treated with Alend? 10 mg daily along with HRT. Subjects were measured BMD at lumbar spine and markers of bone turnover before and after treatment.
Results
Mean changes of markers of bone turnover after 3-Month of treatment were markedly significant. BMD at lumbar spine of the subjects were increased significantly in group II & III who were treated with estrogen and Alend? 5 mg & 10 mg daily than estrogen only group (9.1±4.5%, 7.0±3.2% vs 4.2±1.7%).
Conclusion
Our data showed that treatment with Alend? and HRT for postmenopausal osteoporotic Korean women was very effective, especially in increasing BMD. So, we concluded that alendronate therapy with HRT was helpful to manage osteoporotic Korean Women.
