Abstract
Paget s disease is a chronic disorder of excessive and abnormal bone remodeling in which there is an uncoupling of osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic new bone formation. The excessive remodeling gives rise to bones that are extensively vascularized, weak, enlarged, and deformed with subsequent complications. Paget's disease can affect one or more bones in the body, and the most frequently affected bones are the pelvis, the bones in the skull, the long bones, and the collar bones. The prevalence of Paget's disease increases with age, and there is geographic diversity in prevalence across the nations. While the prevalence in the United States and England are reported to be just below 1%, it is extremely rare in Korea. Although there remains considerable controversy regarding its etiology, several different methods of management have now become available. We report a case of Paget's disease in 51 year-old woman who was treated with pamidronate and showed improvement in the symptoms and the serum alkaline phosphatase level.
Key Words: Alkaline phosphatase, Paget s disease, Pamidronate
